CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Having a big family meant that Motherâs Day wasnât going to slip past without someone noticing. Polly lay in bed early Sunday morning, listening to the sounds of whispers and footsteps outside her bedroom door. Henry had left the room at least an hour and a half ago, making sure no dogs were left with her. The cats would sleep, tucked in close, as long as she allowed them to be there. That was the beauty of her feline friends. They were always there, ready for snuggles ⦠and sleep.
She turned to her side and thought about getting up. It was still early; they had plenty of time before heading for church. What Polly didnât know was the plan for the morning. If she got into the shower now and the kids were ready to do something to celebrate Motherâs Day, would she upset their plan?
No. She was overthinking it. Get into the shower, get out and dressed, and act like it was a normal morning. Any surprises they had in store were predicated on that information. But lying here with Leia tucked in by her head and Luke tucked in front of her tummy felt wonderful. She didnât want to move.
Showers were running, more excessive attempts at silent movement happened, whispers and giggles occurred. Polly couldnât stand it. She had to get up. She also had to go to the bathroom. That sensation wasnât going to go away because she wanted to lie in bed.
âIâm sorry about this,â she said, rubbing Lukeâs back. âYou have no idea how much I want to stay here with you, but not today. Today, I have things to do, people to see, places to go.â
Polly rolled away from the cats and got out on Henryâs side of the bed. She readjusted the sheet and comforter in an attempt to straighten it. The cats werenât moving. âFine, then. My fault. Iâm the one leaving you. When I come back, youâll have no choice. I will move you. Sleep well for the next ten minutes, my friends.â
Luke turned over on his back and stretched. He curled back in on himself, tucking his head between his front paws. Stinking cute cats. They didnât make it easy to walk away.
At least she felt more awake after a shower. Polly snicked the lock on her door so no one could walk in while she was naked. It was going to take a minute to decide what to wear today. Motherâs Day. She was as bad as her daughters about focused celebrations. Only the celebrations that focused on her. Polly was much more comfortable celebrating anyone else. Sheâd put together a party for them with no problem, joyful at doing it. She did have a house full of children, though. It wouldnât do to ignore their celebration of her. She smiled at the number of kids sheâd loved throughout the last ten years. For someone who made it into her thirties without bearing children, sheâd more than made up for it.
